recoveryBox Accountability Feature - the key to recovery

Being accountable to someone is key to recovery for an addiction/habit, hurt or hang-up. Accountability could be a sponsor, accountability partner, or even a counselor that you meet with.

recoveryBox makes this simple and flexible/customizable. You decide what to include in the communication text/email by setting your preferences. Even set a daily/weekly reminder to send this off.

While developing this with counselors, it was decided that this feature should be initiated by the person using recoveryBox. Why? When users initiate accountability, compliance and ownership of recovery increases tremendously.

See how EASY it is to be accountable!  Truly! It is that easy!

Go ahead and make the investment in recoveryBox. It's less than the cup of a coffee!

Age Restriction Problem/Fix

Hi all, I have made changes to the Blog and Devotional Blog for recoveryBox so that I can get the age restrictions for recoveryBox 17+ removed in the Apple Store.  Truly this is my error and I apologize.

If you find that your recoveryBox app suddenly disappears from your device or you can't download from the Apple Store -- no it's still there. It's because you have Age Restrictions on your iPhone/iPad/iTouch and this may be because of many different personal reasons. Please don't worry they app is still there (as long as you didn't delete it)!

As I write this I am uploading a new version to the Apple Store.

iOS8 Support

recoveryBox Update for iOS8

Just waiting for Apple approval. When that happens I'll let you know!

Again thanks to users for testing as well as those who send in requests.

In this next release I have added the following based on user requests as well as bugs identified:

  • iOS8 Support
  • Adding Sobriety Time to Accountability Messages
  • Ability to turn on/off Sobriety Time for accountability messages.
  • Redid the Reminder Messages. For existing users, to take advantage of this, please reset either the Text/Email Accountability reminder And/Or (if you use both) the Add Lights Reminder.  If you are a new user..no worries this will happen automatically for you!
  • Support for iPhone 6/6Plus larger screens
  • Added more motivational quotes (many sent to me by users)
  • Fixed crashing bugs when accessing certain resources
  • Added a few additional badges
  • Worked on better memory management for the entire app
  • Crash when certain users create a text/email accountability message
  • Fixed crash when certain users were editing their addictions
  • Added a few additional badges
  • Changed the Entry Method for the Number of Daily Lights of Green Lights to be more than 10. Will default to 1. An overwhelming number of users asked us to change this and we listened!!
  • And lastly, the Search Light Feature has a calendar that will display a total count of lights entered for the day. As well as give a visual color indicator of how your day went!!
AND SURPRISE:: we have had a number of users as us to create some sort of calendar view so that you can visually see the number of lights entered as well as the over all color for the day. This will allow you to visually see if it's a day of the week that tends to be a yellow or perhaps red's always occur on weekends?

I love that so many of you continue to write in with your requests. One request that I am working on that has been requested is the ability to have How-To's in the video form. Hopefully that will be coming soon!

For now I wish you the best with your recovery!

PS. Of course we haven't been able to test the app on the iPhone 6 or 6Plus and all that testing has been done using simulators (which is not the same as the phone). If you have problems please let me know immediately so I can address them.  We are in the queue of getting one ourselves to test but even we have to wait like so many others.

recoveryBox Update

Just wanted to say thank you to the users who helped identify a bug in recoveryBox. Your data is fine but the app does crash for some users (not all - don't know why but it seems mostly iPhone 5s devices).

This bug will happen when drilling down to see details of your numbers.

We are working on fixing that bug as well as some additional new items requested by our users.  Thanks for your patience and I sincerely apologize!

Group Accountability ~ Crucial to Addiction Recovery and Why It's a Green Light

Group Accountability is crucial to addiction recovery. Many posts on this blog have been about one-to-one accountability, but (and I know this is hard) it's so important to attend some sort of Group Accountability meeting.

It can be a traditional 12 Step Meeting, it can be a group therapy session, or a Celebrate Recovery meeting.  Whatever that looks like for you...but it's so important.

It counts as a G2 - Group Accountability Light.

I mentioned that it's important to find a group that deals with similar addictions.  I will say personally I would not relate to someone who had a drug addiction while I was dealing with CoDependency.  I know from experience that Celebrate Recovery starts with everyone combined to have a worship time and then breaks apart into separate groups and most often by gender.  Others like AA meetings combine everyone together men and women. You are the only one who can decide what feels right but there IS a group that can help you out.

At most meetings you don't have to say a single word until you are ready. But as the time goes along, the reason you attend is to be able to open up, have others understand your experiences, and offer support. Not all meetings are alike - don't give up finding the right one!

Your support system ought to include others who have walked the path that you are going through.

Use recoveryBox with your group to share how your life is turning around and the Green Lights are improving (showing growth in healthy areas).  Share your yellow or red lights when ready.  There is no need to have to rethink everything since you already recorded it. Use that to reflect back at a later date and learn from those mistakes.  Then move on!

Customizing your Lights (both the Yellow and the Red's)

Want to customize your lights for your addiction?

Create the perfect set of Yellow Warning Lights to indicate that you are heading down a path that might lead to destructive behaviors.

Red Lights can be customizes to any type of behaviors that are considered addictions or bad habits.

By tracking these personal behaviors with an accountability partner or sponsor, you can figure out "why you are doing what you are doing" and create a plan to stop these behaviors.

Accountability really works!

Customize your addiction in the Settings section of recoveryBox.

recoveryBox has been named one of Healthline's Best Eating Disorder Apps for 2014.

Don't know how recoveryBox can help you?  Download it today and commit to making a change!

Eating disorders are usually not talked about openly. It’s a difficult subject to approach, which makes treatment and recovery even harder. But for the 24 million Americans suffering from an eating disorder, the condition is very real.
Recovering from an eating disorder requires a great deal of help from trained professionals. These apps are only a small part of a potential plan. But if you’re trying to get well, hopefully one of these can help in some small way.

recoveryBox Adding Addiction Problem App Crashing

WHATS THE PROBLEM: adding an Addiction for the first time OR are trying to add a secondary addiction might crash recoveryBox.

WHO DOES IT AFFECT: only select users.

HOW TO WORK AROUND THIS:  actually, after it crashes, if you just start up recoveryBox your addiction was actually selected and you can continue on.

WHEN WILL IT BE FIXED:  We are in the middle of scrambling to fix it ASAP!!!  Literally hoping to submit to Apple in the next few days!  We just need to test it out a bit more.

If you need help, please email us at support@recoveryboxapp.com

We are truly sorry about this!!

Preparing For Change and the Mistakes We Make

The Parallels of Recovery and New Features

As we are working on the new features of recoveryBox (features that our users have asked us to implement that would aid in their recovery), it's interesting to note that as a team we have come up with observations that you might find interesting and how it parallels recovery.

In fact, these are lessons that really apply to just about anything!

  • If it's something that I am asking for - perhaps others can benefit from it as well.  I think that's actually the point of support groups too -- if I'm going through it, then perhaps others have my same experiences and perhaps I can gain from their journey.
  • It takes courage! Not everyone thinks about asking for features..rather many jump to criticism. But what I tell anyone who writes to me...this app is truly the first of it's kind and it's based on the input from many different counselors and behavior modification systems. And so, there is a chance that what you need might not be a part of them app, or perhaps it's there but you just don't know how to use it. So sending an email is a great way to ask for help. And like the road to recovery, instead of getting down on how the system doesn't always work, ask for help!  There are so many willing to help you out.
  • We all make mistakes!!  Currently I am working on fixing bugs that either I have found in recoveryBox or that have been brought to my attention. Being the person that I am, I hate to make mistakes..not because of pride but rather because I'm afraid to let others down.  And during my own journey I have learned that I am NOT perfect, I have to give myself room to be human and make mistakes. Where we grow as a person, is when we learn from our mistakes.
  • Preparation is KEY! As part of a new recoveryBox version, I am mapping out app the places that I have to make changes. This one feature specifically, while a seemingly small request really touches on the heart of the app and therefore we need to make a lot of changes. In doing so, we have to look at our existing code, plan for the changes we need to make and then test test test!  We want to be prepared so that when we make a change we can support it well.  In recovery, we must prepare for the changes we need to make. Trying to give up drinking while running with the same crowd won't do it. Trying to give up viewing pornography while not making plans to protect your eyes is foolish. If we want to be successful, we must step back, analyze the situation and then make plans.
  • We don't always get what we want! Making changes to recoveryBox based on user requests is exciting because it means there is a huge opportunity to help others. But, there are times when my team has to make difficult decisions such as "How many people have requested this feature?", "How much time will this take to develop?", "Is this truly the best direction for recoveryBox?", "What other demands do I see coming down the road from Apple that I need to implement in order to keep recoveryBox in the store?", "When/if is the right time to try and create the same app in android land?" These really are difficult decisions to make and unfortunately since my team is REALLY small, we can't always satisfy every request.  And in recovery, we don't always get what we want either. Not every relationship is going to be reconciled because of past baggage.  But what we need to remember is - "DID I TRY MY BEST?" and if the answer is yes - then we must learn to accept and move on.
If you haven't already tried recoveryBox, perhaps it's a tool that can get you going in the right direction toward your sobriety. And hopefully the new version will be in the Apple store within a few weeks more!

recoveryBox Uses the Celebrate Recovery Steps or a Traditional 12 Steps - you decide!

Many of us need to utilize structured programs in order to maintain our sobriety. Following a traditional 12 Step program or a Celebrate Recovery program is a great way to do that.  Regardless of which you decide is right for you, it is possible to track your progress in recoveryBox.  You can add goals for each step and journal each step  as well.  Some of us choose to make it very personal and write out our thoughts while others prefer to think about it but not write it down.  Please write to us if you have any questions about how to use this part of the recoveryBox app or if you have suggestions.  We are always here to help!

To access these tools, Click More Tools -> 12 Step Program
